Penny Arcade

This is one of my favorite on-line comics, and one of the few entertainment sites that I check regularly. While it focuses the cartoon misadventures of two archetypical computer/videogame geeks, it does provide the ocasional pearl of ingenious insight.

Tycho’s writing is engaging and provocative, and Gabe’s drawings are always fresh and cartoony.  Go ahead and check it out, and maybe you’ll catch them in a good day and become a regular as well. Cheers!

The Ultimate Diet Coke + Mentos Experiment!

§ October 24th, 2008 § Filed under Uncategorized § No Comments

A few years back, an unseemly match featuring a specific brand of chewable drops and a hugely known brand of diet soda was formed, deep within the vast cyberspace boundaries. All of a sudden, putting Diet Coke and Mentos together was all the rage, and dozens of videos quickly scoured the Internet. Within such videos, several groups of individuals – with apparently nothing better to do – joined together in documenting the caustic properties of this god-forbidden combination. During this time, a glorious piece of Internet lore was woven, and this is something that goes without saying.

Well today, we remember! While many angles were covered during this highschool-like chemistry rush, the video I’m about to display is doubtlessly a paramount, as far as production quality and sheer entertainment value were concerned. If you doubt my words, you need only trust your eyes:

There are many people out there – such as myself – who have been introduced to the world of computing via the massively popular micro-computer from the eighties, the ZX spectrum. Who doesn’t recall the tedious tape loading times, the psychadelic sidebars and that loveable screeching noise? Who can’t relate to the feeling of waiting (sometimes up to) several minutes to play those glorious 8-bit videogame hits which offered unrivaled mistique and entertainment?

ZX spectrum

Well, for anyone up to relive such warm childhood memories, I’ve just found the perfect website! Within http://www.zxspectrum.net/, you’ll be able to play some of the most popular spectrum games ever – such as turmoil, manic miner and chuckie egg! – all sorted by year of production. No downloads necessary! This cool website lets you choose the game from a list and (since the games are so small, when compared to moder-day standards), start playing immediately!

Also, if you’re looking for a comprehensive website focusing the ZX spectrum, including all games that were ever published and much information, check out http://www.worldofspectrum.org/ instead. This website only provides the ROM files, so you’ll also need to download an emulator (there are emulators available for pretty much any machine you can think of, from PC and MAC to X-BOX, PS2, PSP and NDS… even cell phones. If you’re interested in learning more about that, just write a note and I’ll post a follow-up, soon enough.

Here’s a nice video collage of spectrum games that I’ve found:

Finally — for more information on the ZX spectrun, check out the wikipedia article. Enjoy!

Remember the days when you had fun in the sandbox? Well, now you can have Phun!

§ October 10th, 2008 § Filed under Uncategorized § No Comments

If you miss those golden days from your youth when you used to spend countless hours delving in the sandbox, ceaselessly experimenting with the objects around you and getting to know life, I’ve got a great advice for you: go out right this moment, take off your shoes and jump around until your cheeks blush, and get over your self-imopsed adult act. I mean, just because you’ve actually grown-up, doesn’t mean you’re actually expected to act as such *all* the time!

Now, if you just want to indulge a little experimentation in physics using your computer without getting your hands (or feet) dirty, Phun is the thing for you. This software was developed by a computer science student, with the aim of creating “a playground where people can be creative”. According to the author, § Read the rest of this entry…
