Memories of my grandfather’s clock: a rant on sweeping time!

Life is funny that way. I always remember something I heard when I was younger, when I see one of those grandfather clocks. It was a rainy day and I was utterly bored and wanted to go outside and play, and as the perfectly arrogant little brat I was, I naturally vented my frustration on my grandfather who was sometimes placed on babysitting duties. It’s amazing how that old man was terribly patient towards both my mischief and my impatience. I remember I was complaining because I wanted to go home, and it was about time I went home etc., and I stood up and kicked my grandfather’s clock. Do you know how he reacted?

“Easy, boy! You’re just bored because it’s raining outside and you’re acting out your foul mood. But there’s something you should know about time: even though minutes creep up slowly, years go by in a blur! Living a good life is all about learning how to balance these fundamental truths”.

Of course, I absolutely paid no mind to these words back in the day. I was really frustrated because I wanted to go out and play! But you know what? Somehow that little speech just stuck to the back of my head, and to this day I remember what my grandfather said back then, whenever I start feeling bored. Life really is funny that way, I think! Maybe someday I’ll get my own irascible grandkids, as well… and then the circle will be complete. In the meanwhile, I still have to get my own living room grandfather clock, I guess! I don’t know about that just yet, but as truth of the matter I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a grandfather clock Halloween costume, this year. It may sound a little out there, but after reading this post and recalling my fond childhood memories… I might just go for it!
